Frequently Asked Questions
- Can I ask you questions before I book an appointment?
Yes, of course. Either phone me or fill in the email box on my website sidebar. If I am working please leave a Voicemail message and I will call you back when I am free. If you wish me to make confidential contact at a particular time, by phone, text or email. do let me know when and how you'd like me to get in touch. Your confidentiality is important. If you feel reassured, then we will find a time and date that suits us both for your first session. - What happens at our Evaluation Session?
This is your opportunity to tell me why you have come to see me and the reasons you are considering counselling. Some clients have a clear idea of why they wish to come, others don't, they just feel life could be a whole lot better. We'll talk about the issues you wish to bring and you have the opportunity to decide if you could trust me to help you. Professionally I am required to make some confidential notes and take contact details; these are held securely. - What happens at the end of our Evaluation Session?
If you wish to continue with counselling we will contract to work together. Generally we make arrangements to meet on a particular day at a set time. - How will I feel after counselling?
It's usual to feel a lot better when you have a clearer understanding of your difficulties and what you can do to relieve them. However, sessions can uncover sad and painful feelings and you may feel upset in the short-term. These feeling are likely to be less painful at the next session. - How long do I have to come to counselling?
Some clients bring a specific issue they wish to address and have a clear objective; they receive huge relief in five or six sessions and are able to make a difference to their lives. Others get real benefit from a longer period of time to uncover the impact of their experiences on their lives and discover how they can move forward. - Will I have counselling or psychotherapy?
Many clients who are happy to come to counselling feel concerned by the implication that they may need psychotherapy. However, there is such a smooth transition from counselling to therapy that clients rarely know when one ends and the other begins. I find my clients become so eager to know more about themselves and their circumstances that they settle into longer term work quite naturally. - Will counselling work for me?
As you know we are all very different . But the magic element is in the client/counsellor relationship. The trust between us enables you to say things which have never been thought of or spoken about before. So the benefits of counselling include a greater degree of self-awareness and understanding of yourselves and others. This improves your decision-making and self-esteem, and enables you to become reflective in your relationships. Life can feel a lot more enjoyable and fun because you know who you are. - Is what I tell you is confidential?
I am bound by the Codes of Conduct of my professional associations, BACP and SEA, and must keep all of our conversions confidential, providing that what you tell me does not put me in the position of breaking the law or makes me aware that you are contemplating serious harm to yourself or another. If this extremely rare situation should arise we would discuss the issues before any action is taken. - Can I park nearby?
Yes. You may park in the drive or on the road by the consulting room. Parking is free. - Do you have toilet facilities?
Yes. there are toilet facilities at the end of the corridor. - Do you have a Waiting Room?
No. That is why it is important to arrive on time. You will then get your full 55 minutes. I leave a gap of 15 minutes between each client so there should be no possibility of clients meeting face to face. - Do you have wheelchair access?
No. Parking is on the flat with two steps to the front door and a few flat steps to my consulting room. The toilet is not suitable for wheelchair users. But do ask as other options may be available. If you have any other personal impairments do discuss counselling with me.
