Supervision for Professional Practitioners

Support. Respect. Professionalism. Curiosity.

I am currently in the last weeks of training for my Certificate in Supervision, a course validated by Counselling and Psychotherapy Scotland (COSCA). Last year I began to be aware that I needed a new challenge, so I decided to expand my expertise in this field and registered on this course run by ACT Counselling, Glasgow.

In supervisory sessions we will look at your clients' expression of why they have come to see you and what you are you doing to enable your client to reduce their distress, foster their self-awareness and facilitate growth. We will discuss how you and I together see your client, how I see you in the role of counsellor, and lastly how I see the your client.

Using this Existential model whatever your practising model or specialism, I am interested in the following:

Your client: what is your client telling you about their life situation? In what manner are they telling you their story? Can they in fact tell it? Do they come to you with a narrative but cannot reflect upon it? What concerns are they expressing, how are they expressing them? Have they worked out reasons for their unhappiness and pain? Do they know how to alleviate their own distress?

You: what's your 'take' on your client's difficulties and their way of expressing them? How are you both approaching the problems which have been identified? What are you client's values? Are they different from your own? What exactly are you both trying to understand, can you both agree the way forward and agree working goals? Do you need to look at your client differently? How do you interact together?

You and me: what do I understand about your dilemmas with your client? How can I enable you to reflect on your work, and so grow as a counsellor? It's important we explore the 'hiddens' in our sessions and that we are clear about the meaning of our work. What do I know of your way of working and living that is relevant to the work, you, your client and I are engaged in?

Your client and me: I know your client through you, but my way of living and counselling experiences may enable me to look at the situation between you both with another perspective. Do I know something of your clients discomfort and distress?

Your client, you and me: a wide angle lens is is needed. All of us are bringing our unique selves to this enterprise. You and I will work to reflect on how your client can benefit from your work together.
As a counsellor you need to keep being curious, experimenting with different views so that you will be able to correct, clarify and revise your own work. I hope to assist you to see past non-reflective assumptions and, because this is a collaborative effort, I expect you to challenge me in return.
